For the first time ever, the ASEAN Schools Games (ASG) and the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) held their opening ceremonies together. The joint ceremony took place on Jul 1. Apart from sharing the same date of commencement, the common values that both events promote made a joint ceremony the natural option. “Teamwork, perseverance, friendship, excellence and respect. Whether it is in the arts or in sports, these are the values that we want to promote,” said Sum Chee Wah, director of Education Programmes, at the ASG and SYF 2011 press conference held on Jun 23.
